Relational Urbanism

NEGOTIATING DEVICE

This exercise started as a proposal to Zaha Hadid Architects which were in the process of design a 4,500,000 square metres master-plan in Turkey. The main problem which needed to be solved was the redistribution of built volume across the site which would comply both with the individual requirements of 17 land owners as well as a coherent architectural concept based on ideas of block based plan language and smoothly undulating roofs cape.

RELATIONAL MODEL

A relational model was generated in such a way that the traditional loop of trial and error of height adjustment was incorporated into the system, so that the height pattern instead of being an input, becomes an outcome of the process which helps to redistribute GFA according to a pre established pattern of ownership.

INPUTS

ˇ Typology definition catalogue

ˇ Typology distribution pattern via cloud control

ˇ Overall GFA volume

ˇ Land ownership pattern

OUTPUTS

ˇ Height distribution

ˇ GFA database per parcel

ˇ 3D massing

The relational model was also intended to generate the necessary outcome in terms of overall GFA of the buildings as well as a massing strategy.
